Consumers globally are paying attention to air pollution and its impact on their lives, including how it affects their skin and hair. For example, according to a Mintel report, in France 71% of people surveyed believe pollution has a negative effect on the appearance of hair and skin. In India, 40% of consumers also agree that pollution affects hair appearance.
Particulate matter in air pollution adheres to the cuticle of the hair, making it more difficult to comb and lessening its soft, silky feel. Hair shine is also reduced due to less light reflection. In response, Lubrizol Life Science – Beauty (LLS Beauty) has been studying whether polymers could prevent particulate adhesion and minimize clinging to hair. The team developed a method to assess the anti-pollution capabilities of ingredients. This method simulated the contact between pollutants and hair.
Results showed that polymers can protect the hair by creating a shield around the fiber that limits the adhesion of airborne particles up to 4 times vs. non-treated hair. In addition, they can also help to remove particles adhered on the hair, mitigating buildup. Each offering solutions that consumers are seeking.
